Dynamics of Vesicle Suspensions in Shear Flow Between Walls

چکیده
The behaviour of a vesicle suspension in a simple shear flow between plates (Couette flow) was investigated experimentally in parabolic flight and sounding rocket experiments by Digital Holographic Microscopy. The lift force which pushes deformable vesicles away from walls was quantitatively investigated and is found to be rather well described by a theoretical model by Olla [1]. At longer shearing times, vesicles reach a steady distribution about the center plane of the shear flow chamber, through a balance between the lift force and shear induced diffusion due to hydrodynamic interactions between vesicles. This steady distribution was investigated in the BIOMICS experiment in the MASER 11 sounding rocket. The results allow an estimation of selfdiffusion coefficients in vesicle suspensions and reveal possible segregation phenomena in polydisperse suspensions.

We review the dynamical behavior of giant fluid vesicles in various types of external hydrodynamic flow. The interplay between stresses arising from membrane elasticity, hydrodynamic flows, and the ever present thermal fluctuations leads to a rich phenomenology. In linear flows with both rotational and elongational components, the properties of the tank-treading and tumbling motions are now wel...

We investigate the behavior of colloidal suspensions with different volume fractions confined between parallel walls under a range of steady shears. We model the particles using molecular dynamics (MD) with full hydrodynamic interactions implemented through the use of a lattice-Boltzmann (LB) fluid. A quasi-2d ordering occurs in systems characterized by a coexistence of coupled layers with diff...

The lift on a strongly non-spherical vesicle in a bounded shear flow, is studied in the case the membrane moves with a velocity, which is a linear function of the coordinates. The magnitude of the induced drift is calculated as a function of the axes lengths, of the distance from the wall, and of the ratio of the cell to the solvent viscosity. It appears that the main mechanism for lift, in the...
متن کاملLift and down-gradient shear-induced diffusion in red blood cell suspensions.
The distribution of red blood cells (RBCs) in a confined channel flow is inhomogeneous and shows a marked depletion near the walls due to a competition between migration away from the walls and shear-induced diffusion resulting from interactions between particles. We investigated the lift of RBCs in a shear flow near a wall and measured a significant lift velocity despite the tumbling motion of...
متن کاملA new cross - streamline particle migration mechanism in a dilute suspension of spheres in shear flow confined by planar walls
The effects of confinement on the dynamics of binary encounters between spherical particles in shear flow are studied for a system bounded by a single planar wall or two parallel planar walls under creeping flow conditions. We show that wall proximity gives rise to a new class of binary trajectories resulting in cross-streamline migration of the particles. In contrast, in unbounded space spheri...
